Beyond Port, the Douro makes powerful dry reds from the same indigenous varieties. Vinho Verde in the north is light, faintly spritzy, and made for hot afternoons. Because the grape names are unfamiliar, the wines are consistently underpriced.

What to reach for: A dry Douro red, or a Vinho Verde when it is too warm to think.
